Our Approach
At every level of Windhorse care the intent is to take into account all aspects of the client's situation, working towards integration and balance. The primary elements of every clinical program, large or small, reflect this goal. They are: Basic Attendance
Basic Attendance is a fundamental skill practiced by Windhorse clinicians in the course of daily activities which is used to focus awareness on the immediate needs of the moment. Basic Attendance has the integrative effect of gently grounding attention in physical reality and strengthening the empathic bond between client and staff. The practice of Basic Attendance cultivates the moments of clarity, humor, and relaxation found in even the most confused state. These "islands of clarity", when recognized and valued, become the seeds of recovery.
Integrative medicine
It is a basic premise of our approach to recovery that the health of the mind and the body are closely linked. A wellness nurse consults to each client's program. The goal is to establish habits of good health through exercise, proper nutrition, adequate rest and stress management. Our approach emphasizes the cultivation of life-long health. Our nurse is knowledgeable about the many alternative health resources in the community and can provide referrals as requested. She works closely with the client's psychiatrist to find the optimal regimen of medication.
The working team
All clinical work is done in the context of a team. At Windhorse, the clinical team is broadened to include family members providing care and other health care professionals involved with the client. A Windhorse team varies in size, and the team concept enfolds even small teams comprised of one direct care provider. A large team usually includes a team leader, a psychotherapist, a team counselor, a housemate, the wellness nurse, and psychiatrist. The focus of the Windhorse team leader is to connect and integrate each aspect of a client's care, continually viewing the client's situation as a whole.
